Skiathos

Skiathos beach viewSkiathos monasterySkiathos is one of the four Greek islands comprising the Sporades Group, which are considered to be the greenest islands in the Aegean. Skiathos boasts more than 60 beaches, from Koukounaries (voted the best beach in Greece by the Times' readers) with its golden sands fringed by vivid pines, to tiny coves which you might have to reach by walking through fig trees and olive groves.

Skiathos town (known locally as Chora), is a picturesque jumble of white-painted, red-roofed houses that spiral down to the two harbours. In the old port you will find a mixture of fishing boats and day trip cruisers whilst, a few yards away, you will see grand luxury yachts and magnificent inter-island ferries.

The town and harbourside are home to superb, chic fashion shops, jewellers (Greece is famous for its gold) as well as antique shops, and there are many little food shops which offer great value for money, Skiathos housesespecially those tucked off the main street. Just watch where the locals go!

Skiathos comes alive at night with a rich variety of tavernas, bars and clubs. Skiathos at nightWhy not start your evening with a fabulous meal at Sofia's Family Restaurant?

No holiday in Skiathos is complete without a trip to the Evangalistria monastery. There is a bus ride from the town. This is a remarkable place steeped in history and with an amazing air of peace and tranquility. Dating back to 1794, this was the very first place in Greece to fly the blue and white flag.
